Alternative/indie/pop-rock trailblazer Liz Phair has returned with her first album of new material since 2010. And it was worth the wait, as these songs shine and deliver fans a “dose” of classic Phair: specific and sincere songwriting on a variety of topics from love to divorce to finding a golden middle of indulgence. The music here is fairly laid back on the whole, with Phair’s distinctive guitar complimented by a variety of arrangements from programmed drums and hand claps to classic alt rock arrangements with some surprises in each (like brass flourishes on Good Side). Overall, this album is well worth a listen for both long-time fans and those who may have recently discovered her work. And in case you didn’t know, she did used to live in Chicago!
